Will discuss how and why she is involved in environmental justice work, what successful work Sustainable South Bronx is doing and stories of success/struggle from across the country

9:50-10:50 Panel: Growing a Just, Green Economy in North Carolina
Moderator: Cynthia Brown

  • Government/Policy - Rep. Pricey Harrison: State Legislator Will discuss the Greeen Act as well as existing policies and needed changes that will support green economy strategies

  • Education/Training - Dr. Willie Gilchrist: Chancellor, Elizabeth City State University Will discuss the potential role of higher education and community colleges in preparing workers for a green economy, and the ECSU Albemarle Pamlico Green Jobs Initiative funded by Rural Center

  • NC Green Job Opportunities - Steve Fountain: Program Manager, NC Sustainable Energy Association Will discuss where job opportunities exist and/or are emerging in energy, food, housing, water, and transportation

  • Job Training for Young People - Dewayne Barton: Asheville Green Opportunity Corp Will discuss their project and issues related to job training for young people/youth

  • Place-Based Economic Development in the Civic Sector - Mikki Sager: The Conservation Fund, Resourceful Communities Program & Natural Capital Investment Fund Will discuss grassroots rural economic development initiatives funded by TCF's Creating New Economies Fund, and the successes and challenges of doing this work in rural communities
